Why Recruiters Are Now Seeing 300+ Applications Per Role
If it feels harder to get noticed applying for a job right now, the data backs that up. Recruiters are fielding far more applications per opening than they were just a few years ago, and the volume shows no sign of slowing.
The scale of the increase
Recruiting platform Ashby analyzed more than 100 million applications across roughly 200,000 job postings over the past five years and found that applications per hire have tripled since 2021, with the average open role now drawing more than 300 applications. Candidates are now roughly 50% less likely to make it to the interview stage than they were five years ago.
Why the volume keeps climbing
Generative AI tools have made it dramatically easier to tailor and submit applications quickly, and a growing set of auto-apply tools let job seekers respond to postings in bulk with minimal manual effort per application. LinkedIn alone now sees an estimated 11,000 applications submitted per minute on its platform — a 45% jump from a year earlier, according to reporting citing LinkedIn's own data.
Recruiters are adapting, not drowning
Despite the surge, the picture isn't purely negative for hiring teams: after declining in 2022–2023, recruiter productivity has recovered to roughly seven hires per quarter per recruiter, even with application volume elevated, and offer conversion rates have surpassed 2021 levels — a sign the recruiting side has been retooling around AI-era volume about as fast as job seekers have.
